Learning German in Germany – the Loburg Language Year

We are international – language connects us!

Located in the beautiful green Münsterland between the cities of the Treaty of Westphalia – Münster und Osnabrück – the boarding school Schloss Loburg runs a one-year language course for international students.

Learning a language at the place it comes from, where it is spoken every day, makes a lot of sense and is a good investment for the education of your child. If your daughter or son seeks to graduate from school in Germany and get the Abitur as a qualification for studying at university, then participating in our Loburg Language Year is the right decision.

Your child will experience the German language in everyday situations and will be able to practise pronounciation and understanding of the new language on a daily basis.

That includes immerging into the culture of the land, daily communication with teachers and classmates and managing everyday situations: Language is the key and the connecting element everywhere. Another advantage is that the students already get settled in the boarding school during the language year and get focused on entering school in the following year.

In 30 lessons per week the participants will be guided from a beginner’s level to the B2-level within one school year. Of course the result of the course is always dependent on the individual diligence and willingness to learn. Revising the lessons, additional workouts on a regular basis, reading small texts or watching short films in the new language are very helpful to reach the goal you have set for yourself.

Our language teachers use modern methods of learning by referring to everyday situations, encouraging to talk and make use of the new skills. For further support we use in-house tablets containing apps and videos for learning vocabulary, grammar exercises fitted to the individual pace of learning or self-evaluation.

During the last weeks of the course at the end of the school year (usually from the start of the B1-level) school content is incorporated into the class. By this students are well-prepared for entering the Gymnasium. That includes some days of sitting in on school classes after reaching the B1-level.

Classes are scheduled as follows:

Classes are held Monday to Friday from 7:45 am to 12:50 pm (except holiday time in Northrhine-Westphalia). The schedule consists of double lessons, i. e. two consecutive units of 45 minutes each.

We expect the stages of the course to take about the following amount of time:

A1 – Elementary Level 1: ca. 6 – 8 weeks

A2 – Elementary Level 2: ca. 8 weeks

B1 – Middle Level 1: 10 – 12 weeks

B2 – Middle Level 2: 10 – 12 weeks

These dates can differ slightly depending on size and composition of the learning group and shall only serve as a point of reference. After each stage there will be a test of the language skills of the current level. The participants receive a cerfificate about their test result which reflects their skills in listening, reading, speaking and writing.

After reaching the A2-level there will be additional classes in school subjects, such as Maths, Biology, English and History, from 1:45 to 3:15 pm.

Living in boarding school

For the length of the course the participants of the Loburg Language Year live in single bedrooms of the boarding school. The living groups in Loburg boarding school are mixed, i. e. boys and girls live in different homes, but not distinguished by school or language year within the living group. By this situations are created in everyday life in which the students of the language year can and have to use their new language skills as often as possible: „Sprache lernt man durch Sprechen“. („You learn a language by speaking.“) Sometimes this takes a lot of effort at first, but it contributes to a faster learning success. The key is: Don’t be afraid of mistakes! If you dare, you can be corrected kindly and you will have learned something new already.

Catering will be provided by the canteen within Loburg castle. Our cooking team strives to offer a rich variety of dishes. But we know that far from home and your usual cuisine, every now and then it can be a special highlight cooking meals from your home country together and we are delighted when students try out their familiar dishes together.

Should your daughter or son get sick while staying at our boarding school, our Sisters, who are trained and experienced in medical services, are ready to make a doctor’s appointment, to administer a medicine and to care for a quick recovery.
